You must be able to read a tape measure, and some hand tool experience is necessary. If you're eager to learn we encourage you to join.

How can I use my workshop knowledge?

A.

The countertop workshop has been created for individuals who want learn how to build and install custom-made countertops for their own personal use and for those who would like to market their countertop making skills as a business.

How much of the workshop is actually hands on?

A.

About 3/4 of the workshop is hands on. The first part of the workshop is in a classroom setting where you will learn about materials used in countertop fabrication, tools, etc.

Nobody buys laminate anymore, do they?

A.

Yes. In fact, most customers still choose laminate because it is a fraction of the cost of granite, stone, and solid surface. The new laminate edges and colors are a fresh breath of air compared to basic solid colors of the past.

Can someone earn a living building countertops?

A.

Yes. Some people work for established countertop/cabinet companies and others start their own countertop making business. When fabricating as a business, you may recover your Workshop fees after just a few projects.

The home building industry is down. Isn't this bad for countertop making businesses?

A.

If a person or company builds countertops exclusively for home builders they will likely see an up and down trend in work. However, during slower economic times home remodeling tends to increase because people stay in their current homes and just remodel instead of buying a new one. Countertops are also installed in other places like commercial and professional buildings, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, churches, etc., and this helps to balance out the slow times.

Once you obtain the knowledge and develop the skills of countertop making it becomes easier to make laminate cabinets, shelves, computer desks, window sills, display cases/showcases and much, much more.

How long is the Countertop Workshop?

The workshop will last for 4 days.

What should I wear?

A.

Wear work clothes. You will get dusty!

In detail, what will I learn?

A.

Particpants will learn step by step how to build and install 5 styles of laminate countertops, custom support brackets, install full-height backsplashes, and window sills. You will also learn about the necessary tools and materials used in countertop fabrication and where to buy them in your area.
